1. Refrain from Complaining
As we begin our Lenten journey, let us reflect on how often we find ourselves complaining about life’s inconveniences. For today, let’s embrace the penance of not complaining. Refrain from grumbling about traffic, weather, politics, work, salary, or any aspect of daily life.
Instead of voicing complaints, take a moment to offer a prayer of gratitude for the blessings in your life. This small act can help shift our focus from negativity to thanksgiving, leading us to a deeper realization of God’s grace during this holy season.
2. Give Up Your Favorite Beverage
Today, let’s set aside our usual indulgences, such as soft drinks, coffee, tea, juice, shakes, wine, or other favorite beverages. Drink only plain water for the day.
As you do this, take a moment to pray for our brothers and sisters who experience thirst, whether physical due to lack of access to clean water, or spiritual, as they yearn for God’s presence in their lives. This small sacrifice can help us reflect on the simplicity of life and deepen our solidarity with those in need.
3. Connect with Someone Outside Your Comfort Zone
Reach out to someone you find difficult to talk to or with whom you are not at ease. It could be a brief conversation or a simple greeting. Your act of humility and openness can be a powerful step toward reconciliation and understanding.
If you find this suggestion challenging because you are at peace with everyone, consider sending a message to a stranger instead. Share a reflection, a Bible verse, or a Lenten thought, and invite them to experience God’s love. Begin with a short introduction about yourself and make your message one of encouragement and faith, helping them Feel the Love of Christ (FLC).
4. Sleep Early and Rise Early
As the weekend arrives, resist the temptation to stay up late watching movies or scrolling online. Instead, make it a penance to sleep earlier than usual and wake up early. This allows for a peaceful and restful time with the Lord.
Before bed, pray a simple night prayer, reflecting on God’s love and faithfulness. When you wake up, begin the day with a prayer, even if you’re still lying in bed. Use this quiet moment to talk to God, telling Him anything on your heart. Let this extra time in prayer set the tone for your weekend, carrying the awareness of God’s presence with you throughout the day.
5. Give Up Vanity
Let today’s penance focus on simplicity and humility. Consider giving up perfume, cologne, or unnecessary adornments like jewelry or makeup (unless required for your work). Maintain good hygiene but embrace a natural, unembellished presence.
This penance invites us to shift our attention away from self-presentation and toward intercessory prayer for others. Let it be a reminder that our worth is found not in appearances but in God’s unconditional love for us.
6. Give Up Dessert
As we journey through the “desert experience” of Lent, today’s penance invites us to give up our dessert—no fruits, candies, chocolates, cakes, or sweets of any kind.
For those who have a sweet tooth, this small act of self-denial may be a real challenge, but let’s offer this sacrifice for those who have experienced devastation from recent calamities. Through this act, we can cultivate a spirit of solidarity and compassion for those who carry heavy burdens.
These simple penances are small but meaningful ways to draw closer to God during Lent. They encourage us to step out of our comfort zones, practice mindfulness, and grow in faith and love for others. Each day, may these acts lead us to deeper reflection on Christ’s sacrifice and a renewed spirit of humility and gratitude.
