The Boulder and the Bolder*

In  ancient times, a wise king devised a test for his people. He ordered a large boulder to be placed squarely in the middle of a busy roadway, effectively blocking passage. Then, concealing himself nearby, the king observed how his subjects would react to the obstruction.

Throughout the day, many travelers approached the boulder. Among them were the kingdom's wealthiest merchants and high-ranking courtiers. They inspected the obstruction but chose to do nothing about it. Instead, they circled around the boulder, muttering complaints about the inconvenience. Some loudly criticized the king, blaming him for not ensuring the roads were properly maintained. Despite their grumbles, none took action to remove the stone from the path.

Later, a peasant carrying a load of vegetables came along. When he encountered the boulder, he set down his burden and carefully examined the situation. Determined to clear the road, the peasant pushed, strained, and struggled against the massive rock. It was no easy task, but after much effort, he managed to roll the boulder aside.

As the peasant prepared to continue his journey, he noticed something unexpected where the boulder had been. On the ground lay a purse. Curious, he picked it up and discovered it was filled with gold coins. Alongside the coins was a note from the king, which read: "This reward is for the one who removes the boulder from the road."

In that moment, the peasant understood a profound truth that many overlook: obstacles are not merely inconveniences but opportunities in disguise. While others chose to complain or evade the challenge, he took action and was rewarded—not only with gold but with the satisfaction of knowing he had improved the path for all who would follow.

This story serves as a powerful reminder that every difficulty we face carries the potential to transform our circumstances for the better. Challenges test our character, resilience, and willingness to act, often leading to growth and unexpected rewards when we meet them head-on.
